Tattoo Removal
Tattoos can be removed on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia. The most common techniques include laser surgery that removes the tattoo by selectively treating the pigment colors with a high-intensity laser beam. Lasers have become the standard treatment because they offer a low risk, highly effective approach with minimal side effects. The type of laser used generally depends upon the pigment colors and depth of the ink in the skin. Pulses of light from the laser are directed onto the tattoo breaking up the tattoo pigment. The laser selectively targets the pigment of the tattoo without damaging the surrounding skin.
Researchers have determined which wavelengths of light to use and how to deliver the laser's output to best remove tattoo ink. The light energy may be delivered as a continuous wave of light or in pulses, depending on the treatment and the type of laser used. When the ink particles of the tattoo absorb the light from the laser, they are broken up into tiny fragments. These fragments are then absorbed through the body's natural cleansing mechanism.
Treatments should be placed 4 to 8 weeks apart to allow your body to remove the maximum amount of tattoo pigment. Treatment sessions usually take from 10 to 30 minutes.
